The Best Caravan Levelling Ramps & Blocks | A Guide

    Windsor-Blog-image-Caravan-packing-list.jpg

Setting up camp is half the fun of caravanning, but let's be honest, nobody enjoys the struggle of trying to level their caravan on uneven ground. Camping should be super-relaxing, right? That's where caravan levelling ramps and blocks prove their adventuring-in-the-outdoors worth. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a caravan newbie, having the right levelling gear can make all the difference between a smooth setup and a stressful start.

Here's our guide to the difference between them, what types of terrain they are suitable for, and some of the most popular brands available. Level up your camping experience, and spend less time adjusting and more time enjoying! (Also, check out our guide to the Best Camping & Caravanning Apps, where you can learn about the clever Caravan Level Remote app).

    What is caravan levelling?

Caravan levelling is the process of adjusting your caravan to a flat, level position when it's parked. This ensures it is balanced on uneven ground and has an even distribution of weight to help maintain its stability, safety and comfort during your stay.

    Why is it important?

Before we look at the specifics of some of the most popular caravan levelling systems, it's vital to understand why levelling your caravan is vital.

    • Enhances comfort: A level caravan provides a stable environment, making it more comfortable to eat, relax, and, most importantly, sleep!

    • Optimises appliance performance: Many caravan appliances, like stoves and fridges, work best when the caravan is level, preventing inefficiency and possible damage.

    • Prevents water issues: A level caravan can help ensure that water systems (like toilets and sinks) function properly by avoiding blockages and leaks.

    • Improves safety: Proper levelling stabilises your caravan, reducing the risk of sliding or tipping, especially on uneven ground.

    • Protects your RV: Caravan levellers reduce stress on a caravan's chassis and suspension, helping to prevent premature wear and damage.

    Caravan levelling blocks

    Windsor-Blog-Image-Wheel-Chock-1200x800.jpg

Levelling blocks for caravans are typically larger than chocks, and are designed to raise one side of the caravan to make it level. They are used for more significant height adjustments and are often stacked to achieve the desired level.

    Advantages

    • Simple to use: Levelling blocks are portable, lightweight, easy to use, and require minimal setup.
    • Affordable: Levelling blocks are generally cheaper compared to other levelling devices.
    • Durable: Often made from rigid, weather-resistant plastic, they can withstand harsh weather and heavy weight.
    • Compact: Most blocks can be stacked or nested together, making them easy to store in your caravan or towing vehicle.

    Limitations

    • Height limitations: For very uneven ground, you may need multiple blocks, and there may still be limitations on how high you can go.
    • Manual effort: You'll need to drive or roll the caravan onto the blocks, which requires a certain level of accuracy and may not be ideal for larger caravans.

    Popular brands:

    • Tuffblock
    • Camco
    • Levelling blocks by ALKO

    Caravan levelling ramps

    Windsor-Blog-Image-Wheel-Ramp-1200x800.jpg

Caravan levelling ramps are typically used to raise both wheels of one side of the caravan simultaneously rather than lifting one wheel at a time. The caravan is driven onto the ramps to raise the vehicle. These ramps typically have a higher weight capacity than individual levelling chocks or blocks and are designed for ease of use.

    Advantages

    • Quick setup: Levelling ramps can often be used faster than stacking individual levelling chocks or blocks, as you only need to drive the caravan onto the ramp.
    • Suitable for steeper slopes: Ramps are often better suited for steeper terrain as they provide a smooth incline.
    • Stable: When properly used, levelling ramps can offer a stable and secure base for the caravan.

    Limitations

    • Suited to solid ground: If you are camping on sand or loose gravel, the ramps may sink or shift, making them less effective.
    • Storage space: Ramps are larger and bulkier than levelling blocks, so they may take up more space in your caravan or towing vehicle.

    Popular brands

    • Quick Camp
    • Camec Caravan Ramp

    Caravan level - Bubble levellers

    Windsor-Blog-Image-Leveller-1200x800.jpg

Although not a levelling device as such, a bubble level is a helpful tool to ensure your caravan is properly levelled after using blocks, ramps, chocks, or other levelling devices. A bubble level is a small, portable device that visually reads your caravan's level. You place it on a caravan's surface (like a shelf or countertop) and it will show whether the vehicle is level from side to side or front to back. It's a great tool to include in your caravan tool kit.

    Advantages

    • Affordable: Bubble levels are inexpensive and easy to use.
    • Accurate: They give a simple, clear reading to ensure your caravan is levelled correctly.

    Limitations

    • Manual adjustment: You will still need to adjust the caravan manually using blocks or ramps.

    Popular brands

    • Camec
    • AL-KO
    • Thetford
    • Triton
    • Fiamma
    • Outback Campers

Caravan levellers come in various types, each with its own benefits and limitations. Whether you choose traditional levelling blocks or the simplicity of ramps, the key is to choose the right solution for your budget, caravan type, and personal preferences. Set up safely and comfortably, and let the great outdoors do the rest!
