The Darling River Run is one of the most popular — it’s the ultimate NSW outback odyssey, offering winding river routes and a relaxed, off-the-beaten-path journey unlike any other. This trip will take you around a week if you leave from Sydney, but it can also be done from Adelaide, extending the trip via Broken Hill and Menindee for a 9 to 10-day outback adventure.

    NSW Outback Road Trip Maps

The journey essentially has two stages—the journey from Sydney to Wilcannia, and then the Darling River run section.

Stage 1: Sydney to the Outback

Stage 2: The Darling River Run

What Type of RV Do I Need?

Most of the Darling River Run uses sealed roads, including the Kamilaroi Highway, Mitchell Highway, and Barrier Highway, so a standard caravan and motorhome can easily handle it. If you do want to venture onto unsealed tracks and national parks like the Mutawintji National Park tracks, you’ll need a 4WD and a semi-off-road or a hybrid caravan.
