Day 1: Cunnamulla → Charleville (~200 km / 2 hrs)

Start your adventure in Cunnamulla, the land of the legendary Cunnamulla Fella (the legend made famous by musician Slim Dusty). Pop into the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Centre for a deep dive into the region’s Aboriginal and pastoral history, and while you're there, grab a ticket to the Cunnamulla All Aboard — a 3D sound and light show packed with tall tales and railway heritage. Soothe those travel-weary muscles with a soak in the naturally heated Cunnamulla Hot Springs before you hit the road again for Charleville. Highlights here include the Charleville Cosmos Centre (galaxy-gazing at its finest), and the Charleville Bilby Experience is where you can meet Australia’s most adorable endangered marsupial.
Day 2: Charleville → Blackall (~340 km / 4 hrs)

Break up the drive with a stop at Tambo, where you can learn about the town’s rich pastoral history, Aboriginal heritage, and early explorers. Then continue on to Blackall, birthplace of shearing legend Jackie Howe. Swing by the historic Blackall Woolscour, the last remaining steam-powered wool-washing plant in Australia, then take a soak in the Blackall Aquatic Centre’s artesian spa, naturally heated to 32°C … bliss!
Day 3 & 4: Blackall → Longreach (~360 km / 4.5 hrs)

On the way to Longreach, stop in Barcaldine, the Garden City of the West. This town helped shape Australia’s union movement. Visit the Tree of Knowledge memorial and the Australian Workers Heritage Centre to brush up on your history. Once you reach Longreach, take two days to dig into the town’s iconic attractions. Must-dos include the Qantas Founders Museum (get inside a 747!), the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, and the Cobb & Co Stagecoach Ride (bumpy but brilliant fun). End your last day here with a sublime sunset cruise on the Thomson River.
Day 5 & 6: Longreach → Winton (~200 km / 2 hrs)

Winton — where Banjo Paterson penned the iconic bush ballad, Waltzing Matilda, in 1895. Visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre for interactive exhibits and local history. If you love ancient reptiles, you’re in luck. The Australian Age of Dinosaurs is home to the largest fossil collection in the country. It’s a must-stop! Time your visit with the Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival (in late June/early July) or catch a movie under the stars at the Royal Open Air Theatre.
Day 7: Winton → Cloncurry (~470 km / 5.5 hrs)

Your next stop is Cloncurry, affectionately known as "The Curry". Surrounded by red hills and sweeping plains, this town has stories galore! Start at the Cloncurry Unearthed Visitor Information Centre and Museum, where you’ll find everything from Burke and Wills artefacts to one of Australia’s most impressive rock and mineral collections. Then detour to Mary Kathleen, a ghost town and former uranium mining site, now Insta-famous for its eerie remains and emerald-coloured lake.
Day 8: Cloncurry → Karuma (~200 km / 2 hrs)
The road to Karumba is long, but the views are worth it. Stop by the Purple Pub in Normanton (yes, it’s bright purple) and snap a selfie with Krys the Croc, a replica of a real 8.63m saltie caught nearby in 1957.
Pull into Karumba just in time for a Gulf sunset, and while you're in town, swing by the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre & Hatchery, a working hatchery where you can feed the barramundi and learn why Karumba is a fishing hotspot.
Day 9 Onwards: Return Trip
You’ve got a few options for your return trip to Cunnamulla:
Coastal Outback Loop: Karumba → Normanton → Croydon → Richmond → Winton → Blackall → Cunnamulla. Highlights: Historic towns like Normanton and Croydon, Outback scenery, and a slightly different perspective on the Matilda Way.
Inland Loop via Mount Isa: Karumba → Cloncurry → Mount Isa → Longreach → Blackall → Cunnamulla. Highlights: Mining towns, Qantas Founders Museum, Outback landscapes, and Longreach attractions on the return journey.
Direct Route (Fastest): Karumba → Cloncurry → Winton → Blackall → Cunnamulla. Highlights: The most direct return along familiar stops, perfect if you want to retrace key towns and spend less time on the road.
