Top End Road Trip
We recently enjoyed 6 awesome weeks exploring the Top End of the Northern Territory, and have fallen in love with its tropical laid back vibe and incredible natural environments!
It’s hard to believe that such a vibrant capital city can be found in such a remote location! We immediately fell in love with Darwin and with so much on offer to see and do, it’s easy to understand how you can stay and play for so long!
Here’s our tips on the top things to do when visiting the Top End!
Our favourite FREE experience was the world class Waterfront Precinct, complete with safe swimming salt water lagoon, Beach Club that boasted lush green lawn, deckchairs and palm trees, and an impressive selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. There are paid experiences here too, like the awesome wave pool and aqua park, and if you want to stay longer you can with a number of hotels and apartment style accommodation that overlook the precinct and Darwin Harbour.
Explore From Above
Our favourite way to explore the city was on the Hop On Hop Off double decker Big Bus tour. With 12 stops across the city it is a great way to get a lay of the land, and visit some of Darwin’s best destinations and attractions including the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, Stokes Hill Wharf, the fantastic Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Cullen Bay, and the impressive World War 2 Oil Storage Tunnels.
No trip to the Top End is complete without taking in a breathtaking Darwin sunset over the ocean and there are so many perfect vantage spots across the city. Our favourites were from Little Mindil Beach, Cullen Bay and overlooking the city while riding the Skyline Ferris wheel on Stokes Hill Wharf.
Marvel At Mother Nature
With two incredible National Parks within an easy drive of Darwin, there is more amazing environment to discover than you’ll have time! We spent 3 fantastic days at Kakadu, immersing ourselves in the abundant wildlife and cultural heritage, and swimming at secluded waterfalls and rockpools. We also stayed for a week at Litchfield and discovered spectacular waterfalls, ancient landscapes and safe swimming rockpools the entire family will love! A visit to either of these incredible National Parks makes an awesome self-drive holiday no matter what style of traveller you are!
